A.— CHIM., MÉTALL. Opération consistant à combiner le mercure avec un autre métal, spécialement l'or et l'argent, pour les extraire de leur minerai. Amalgamation directe, indirecte; procédé, table d'amalgamation :
• 1. ... pour la dorure et l'argenture, le cuivrage doit être suivi d'une légère amalgamation, laquelle n'est pas utile dans le nickelage.

Le minerai broyé passe sur des tables d'amalgamation qui sont souvent soumises à un mouvement de va-et-vient pour mieux assurer le contact entre le minerai et la table, laquelle est faite de plaque de cuivre amalgamée en surface. L'or s'attache à la surface de la table, formant un amalgame que l'on recueille aisément au moyen d'une raclette caoutchoutée.
